A stronger Netherlands thanks to graduates of higher professional education

Higher professional education students, lecturers and alumni contribute every day to finding solutions to major societal challenges. Under the motto “The Netherlands is stronger – with higher professional education graduates”, universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands are demonstrating just how significant that contribution is.

In doing so, the universities of applied sciences are highlighting how graduates contribute to areas such as sustainability, technology, health and quality of life. During their studies, students work on real-world issues and develop the knowledge and skills needed to help the Netherlands move forward.

The Association of Universities of Applied Sciences has launched the website www.sterkermethbo.nl for this purpose. This website features examples of projects in which students, lecturers and researchers work alongside businesses and civil society organisations to find solutions to current challenges.

Fontys project to tackle loneliness

Fontys is also contributing to the initiative. One of the examples on the website is the app ‘Bakkie Doen’ (photos). This app was developed by Fontys students and helps to reduce loneliness amongst older people living independently. The project demonstrates how students are applying their knowledge to tackle social problems.
Furthermore, Fontys students have developed ‘Alampje’, a bicycle light with an alarm function designed to promote personal safety. And with ‘RestNest’, Fontys students have devised a smart alarm clock intended to curb excessive mobile phone use before bedtime.

Learning by doing
A hallmark of higher professional education is the strong link between education and practice. Students work alongside organisations, businesses and institutions on issues that are directly relevant to society. In this way, they learn not only the theory, but also how to apply that knowledge.
Graduates from universities of applied sciences are therefore vital to sectors such as healthcare, education, engineering and ICT. They help organisations innovate and contribute to a strong economy and high-quality public services.
