For the second year in a row, Fontys ICT has won the open category of the Self Driving Challenge! On Thursday 12 June, 13 motivated Fontys students from various backgrounds within HBO-ICT and the Delta Programme competed against teams from other universities of applied sciences and universities on the RDW test circuit in Lelystad.
Their autonomous vehicle, BRUM1 (named after the children's series Brum), returned with a major upgrade: new technologies, an advanced navigation system and the use of cost maps ensured faster and more accurate decision-making. During the challenge, realistic traffic scenarios were simulated, such as stopping at red lights or anticipating pedestrians crossing the road. BRUM1 was the only vehicle to complete the course without any errors.
The Self Driving Challenge is an initiative of the RDW and offers students a practical opportunity to develop their skills in AI engineering, operating systems and autonomous driving.
"These vehicles must meet a number of minimum requirements. Frans Mouws, lecturer at Fontys ICT and project leader, explains: ‘Our students must, of course, work well together, but they also need to be creative. We receive support from the Future Automotive research group at Fontys Engineering and the High Tech Embedded Software research group. The team has once again demonstrated that innovation, collaboration and perseverance pay off.’ The students are proud to take home the victory for the second year in a row.
